Dope hits the Mainstream
October 17 is one those signal days. In Canada, that was the day that marijuana became legal.
It’s been coming for a long time.
“Legalization” In its truncated and crabbed fashion has crept across from Amsterdam to Colorado and through several states – although they have limited legislative authority to deal with it – to our shores.
But as one Globe and Mail article puts it: dope may be legal but the stigma remains.
Folks celebrating this enlightened moment would do well to keep that in mind.
In social media, the trails of indulgence are lasting – and available to all. Your gleeful toking on Facebook will show up at the next screening interview. It won’t reflect well on your prospects.
And don’t think for a second that Canadian granting of social licence will have any impact on our giant friends to the south. Their Federal US government continues to take a 0 tolerance stance regardless of the experiments of several states. Even answering “have you ever tried…” in the positive at the border is enough to bar you from entry! Let alone the border agents taking your smartphone and perusing your social media record or mailboxes – which they are now doing.
An enduring stain on your future is a very real potential. Don’t be lulled into fantasizing otherwise.
The new era is not yet fully here!
